On 9th April 2023, a weekly seminar initiative of LIKE Lab was held on the topic “Reconceptualizing scaling and its practices” at Kathmandu University School of Arts, Balkumari, Lalitpur. The seminar aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the traditional and contemporary state of scaling science, as well as to explore innovative ways to scaling research and its practices.
The “Rethinking Scale: Moving Beyond Numbers to Deep and Lasting Change” by Cynthia E. Coburn and “Scaling Strategy Worksheet: Planning to Scale” by Jenny Perlman Robinson, Molly Curtiss Wyss, and Patrick Hannahan were two major papers that were discussed to understand different concepts of scaling science and plan to scale.
The session covered an in-depth discussion and a presentation on how to plan a program or intervention to scale using the scaling strategy worksheet. The discussion included how the scaling strategy worksheet may be used in any scaling research to grasp the potential of the program. The discussion also incorporated the ways of using four guiding principles of scaling science: justification, optimal scale, inclusive coordination, and dynamic evaluation in the scaling process.
Overall, the seminar gave participants a great chance to learn about the most recent trends and advancements in scaling science. The seminar had a total of 11 participants, including 8 females and 3 males.
