Kathmandu, Nepal: Educational journalists from various media outlets such as Kantipur Daily, Online Khabar, The Kathmandu Post, Gorkhapatra, Nepal Television, Shilapatra, and Nepal Samachar Patra Daily gathered at a knowledge exchange event aimed at strengthening the public school education system in Nepal through evidence-based news generation.
The event was organized on 29th March 2023, at New Baneshwor by Learning, Innovation and Knowledge Exchange (LIKE) Lab and featured a presentation by the Project Coordinator of “Effectiveness and Scalability of Programs for Children Who Are Out of School and at Risk of Dropping Out in Bangladesh Bhutan and Nepal”.
During the event, participants discussed the importance of evidence-based reporting and the need for accurate and reliable information to inform public policy decisions. Journalists also shared their experiences covering education in Nepal and discussed strategies for improving the quality of their reporting.
Speaking at the event, the Principle Investigator of the ESP Project, Dr. Binayak Krishna Thapa, stressed the vital role that journalists play in shaping public opinion and shaping policy. He emphasized the need for journalists to be well-informed and to rely on evidence-based reporting when covering education issues.
The event was also an opportunity for journalists to network and collaborate, sharing ideas and best practices for improving their reporting on education. LIKE Lab plans to hold similar events in the future, in collaboration with educational journalists, to continue to build a strong, evidence-based education media network in Nepal.
