Research Seminar on “Online Child Protection & Well-Being”

KATHMANDU, NEPAL, MAY 22nd, 2025 – The Learning, Innovation and Knowledge Exchange (LIKE) Lab at Kathmandu University School of Arts hosted a research seminar on “Online Child Protection & Well-Being” at the Seminar Hall, Hattiban. The session aimed to raise awareness about the challenges and opportunities of protecting children in digital spaces.

Facilitated by Ms. Anushka Shrestha, the seminar featured a presentation by Mr. Sulav Ratna Bajracharya, Research Associate at ChildSafeNet, a not-for-profit organization working to make digital environments safer for children and young people.

  • Mr. Bajracharya provided an overview of risks such as online addiction, cyberbullying, and sexual exploitation, emphasizing the urgent need to create safer digital environments for children.
  • He highlighted parents’ critical role in protecting children online, including monitoring internet use, understanding social media platforms, and setting appropriate screen time limits.
  • The seminar stressed promoting digital literacy among children and youth to empower them to navigate online spaces responsibly.
  • The study advised parents to exercise caution when sharing photos and videos of their children on platforms like TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram.
  • Mr. Bajracharya stressed that the minimum legal age for creating social media accounts is 13 years, urging the participants to remain vigilant about compliance.
  • Risks linked to certain apps and games (e.g., FreeFire, PUBG, Omegle, Tinder) were discussed, highlighting exposure to violence, inappropriate content, and online predators.
